This issue continues the celebration of nature with Part II of our feature on gardening in Mendocino County. The way we feel about what we cultivate is as varied as the yield. Those interviewed speak with passion about what they grow, be it trees, flowers or herbs. We learn about harvesting sea vegetables, growing wine organically, and about the frightening demise of the valuable soybean as Monsanto attempts to control the world market with genetically altered varieties that require their pesticide, Roundup®. We also offer a series of interviews of textile artists including a shepherd, spinners and weavers. Highlighting this theme, our cover artist, Linda MacDonald, discusses life, politics and social awareness via quilt making. We share an inspiring interview with Loni Baur, former Buddhist nun/Chinese translator/ singer-songwriter/ record producer at the City of 10,000 Buddhas, who now uses her talents as an attorney to help people through the tangle of the legal system. A group of Wild Wilderness Women share a nine year tradition of annual backpacking trips in which they learn lessons of identity and interdependence. Through physical hardships and emotional conflict, the group has risen to new levels of maturity and integrity. The Annual Business & Service Directory has doubled in size and will serve as an invaluable business resource, as well as provide educational enjoyment. Take the time to study it! Next issue we have articles on local archaeology, a tribute
to Marija Gimbutas, the history of Western handwriting, menopause,
and an exploration into the topic of ethics and much more. Grace
